INTERVIEW

MEET IRMA: Inspired by how spaces make us feel

In recent years, Irma Nelson has focused her work on the interior, exploring how our physical surroundings influence our thoughts and behaviour. Small details can transform a space, and Irma explains how deliberate design decisions can elevate an atmosphere.

“Spatial features, materiality, lighting, acoustics, furniture, and colours all play an important role and need to be thoughtfully considered when creating spaces people want to spend time in.”

Tell us a bit about yourself. How did your interest in architecture first start?

Architecture has always been a big interest of mine. Even as a child, I loved drawing and creating things, so choosing architecture felt very natural. What has changed over time is where my attention lies. In recent years, it has been more focused towards interior.

What sparked that direction?

I find the field of environmental psychology really important. It explores how our physical surroundings influence our thoughts, behaviour and overall well-being. Interior spaces involve many of the critical aspects that shape our experience of the built environment and, ultimately, how we feel in a space.

Could you describe how interiors - and other spatial elements - influence the way you think about design?

Spatial features, materiality, lighting, acoustics, furniture, and colours all play an important role and need to be thoughtfully considered when creating spaces people want to spend time in. Even when these qualities are not consciously noticed, they have a significant impact on how we feel and behave. In every architectural project I work on, I try to incorporate these considerations from the very beginning. I believe this contributes to a more holistic design approach, which will also help avoid more costly solutions later in the project.

Can you tell us about a recent project where these ideas really came to life?

One recent project involved developing an interior concept for an airport lounge. The ambition was to create a sophisticated atmosphere with a strong sense of place.

The feature I appreciated the most was a shimmering central cocktail bar, clad in small metallic plates that served as a playful contrast to the otherwise quite muted interior. To me, the potential success of a statement piece like this lies in the details. If the intention is for the bar to sparkle and become a focal point, the material is only one aspect to consider. Equally important is how the material is detailed and illuminated. By slightly bending each of the polished metal panels, the number of light reflections across the surface is increased. Combined with spotlights directed towards the bar, a shimmering effect, reminiscent of a disco ball, could be achieved. It is a small detail, but one that transforms the atmosphere and demonstrates how thoughtful design decisions can elevate the overall spatial experience.

What inspires you most in your work right now?

Right now, I am inspired by discovering more about new materials. Through various external courses and seminars, ZESO encourages me to explore different fields and stay updated within interior design which is something I value a lot.
