VAGAR AIRPORT

The design concept is inspired by the Faroese landscape and culture, interpreted through the tradition of Faroese knitting, where individual threads are woven into a resilient fabric. Dramatic cliffs, shifting light, and the strong presence of nature inform the building’s form and materiality, while the knitting metaphor reflects how the project brings together the existing and the future, the local and the international, and function and experience. These elements are not treated as opposites, but as interwoven layers that create a calm and contemporary airport environment. Robust, honest materials, generous daylight, and carefully framed views establish a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Other key drivers throughout the design process have been functionality and passenger flow. The terminal layout is organized to ensure intuitive wayfinding, efficient separation of arriving and departing passengers, and smooth transitions between landside and airside functions. The expansion introduces clearer circulation patterns and flexible spaces that can adapt to changing operational requirements, seasonal variations, and future growth. Sustainability is embedded in the project through a focus on long-lasting materials, energy-efficient solutions, and a design approach that prioritizes durability and adaptability in a harsh North Atlantic climate. 

The terminal is as a structure that can accommodate evolving aviation standards and passenger expectations over time. The expansion also strengthens Vágar Airport’s role as a critical infrastructure hub, while expressing a distinct Faroese identity, offering travellers a welcoming arrival and departure to the islands.
