POP-UP UNITS

During the redevelopment of Terminal 3, Copenhagen Airport required a temporary retail solution that could maintain a high-quality passenger experience while accommodating continuous spatial change. In response, a modular system of movable pop-up units was designed to be relocated and reused across the terminal.

Concept

The modular retail system is designed to meet both operational and commercial needs. A lightweight frame creates open, adaptable units that provide a clear and cohesive retail identity. The airport provides the base structure and lighting, while tenants customize the facades and interiors to reflect their brands.

Key design principles:

  • Maximize visible facade area for better retail exposure
  • Use interchangeable panels for branding, display and secure nighttime closure
  • Multiple branding opportunities and back-of-house storage within each unit
  • Eliminating fixed roofing while incorporating flexible lighting tracks
  • Create a dedicated front area for product display and customer interaction

System

The initial rollout consists of three connected units. Built as a kit-of-parts, the units can be assembled, disassembled and reconfigured for different locations or layouts. Each unit combines a customer-facing retail area with integrated storage, allowing the system to expand, shrink or adapt as needed.

Design for Disassembly

All elements are prefabricated for quick assembly and disassembly, reducing installation time and making the units easy to relocate and reuse.

Sustainability

Designed for long-term flexibility, the modular system can be reused, relocated and reconfigured as needs change. This extends the lifespan of the units, supporting a more sustainable approach to airport retail.
