The Loop

A competition proposal from ZESO Architects for a library and bookstore in western China. The Loop aims to be a tower or temple creating a holistic and inviting atmosphere for readers and visitors.

The design of The Loop has many interpretations e.g., the infinity of knowledge, the movement of people and a continuous view without a particular direction.  Aesthetically, the round shape of The Loop refers to the design of libraries in ancient civilizations, which were only for the few.  However, due to The Loop’s use of glass and transparent elements, it reinvents this idea and becomes a temple open to everyone.

The center of The Loop is designed to be an empty space inviting readers to meditate and reflect while also functioning as a natural ventilation system that saves energy. Cold air flows through the floor of the building all the way to the top and this ‘chimney effect’ cools the building.

The Loop has an inclusive geometry that naturally settles in its context, integrating the urban and natural surroundings into the bookstore space.
